About Pre Advanced

The Pre Advanced Level is designed for dedicated dancers who are ready to perform complex choreography without sacrificing technique, control, or artistry. Students have the opportunity to continue to experiment with their own personal expression and creativity. At this level dancers are expected to bring focus and commitment to each combination and every class. For ballet dancers who have developed the necessary strength, Pointe work may be introduced at this level.

Pre Advanced Level Dance Classes:

Pre Advanced Ballet

Ballet is a classical dance form built on a strong foundation of technique, proper alignment, and body control. Students ages 13+ work at an elevated level of precision, tackling more advanced barre and center combinations that demand refined technique, alignment, and artistry. At the Pre-Advanced Level, dancers deepen their commitment to discipline, resilience, and the performance quality that defines an exceptional dancer.

Pre Advanced Pointe

Pointe is an extension of ballet training for dancers who have developed the strength, technique, and physical readiness required to dance on pointe shoes. Students continue to refine their classical technique while beginning to build the skills needed to dance en pointe safely and beautifully. Pointe is available to Pre-Advanced and Advanced level ballet dancers only, which is determined by SESD placement.

Pre Advanced Jazz

Jazz is an energetic and expressive style of dance that combines technical skill with personality and performance quality. Students ages 13+ work at an elevated level of technical precision, executing complex isolations, syncopated rhythms, and dynamic combinations with intention and artistry. At the Pre-Advanced Level dancers refine their performance quality and stage presence while developing confidence.

Pre Advanced Contemporary

Contemporary dance is a dynamic, artistic, and grounded genre that encourages dancers to move with freedom and intention. Students ages 13+ work with greater depth and intention through body weight, kinesphere, and gravity as movement becomes more complex and expressive. At the Pre-Advanced Level dancers move thoughtfully through space exploring varied textures, dynamic transitions, and floor work with increasing confidence, pushing the boundaries of movement and discovering new ways to tell stories through their bodies.

Pre Advanced Hip Hop

Hip Hop brings the awesome energy and culture of street dance into the studio. Students ages 13+ learn to combine age-appropriate choreography, technical mastery, and dynamic footwork. At the Pre Advanced Level classes are high energy and fun. Dancers groove into creative expression and command every beat with confidence.

Pre Advanced Lyrical

Lyrical dance combines the technical foundation of ballet and jazz with emotional storytelling and musical interpretation. Students ages 13+ work at an elevated level of technical precision and emotional depth, connecting deeply with the music to express meaning and feeling through fluid, intentional movement. At the Pre-Advanced Level dancers develop the artistry and musical sensitivity that define a compelling lyrical performer.

Intermediate and Up JTS (Jumps, Turns, Strength)

JTS is a supplemental class for dancers ages 10+ designed to help build the skills and physical strength needed to excel in all of their dance classes. Students focus specifically on improving their jumps, perfecting their turns, and developing the core and overall body strength that supports strong technique. By building stamina and reinforcing proper alignment and muscle strength, JTS at the pre advanced level plays an important role in helping dancers stay healthy and reduce their risk of injury. JTS is a great complement to any dancer’s training schedule.

Intermediate and Up Acrobatics

Acrobatics at the intermediate and up level for students ages 10+ blends elements of dance technique and gymnastics for a fun dynamic class. Class time focuses on strength, flexibility, balance, and body control through skill-based training rooted in safe technique. Students continue building on foundational skills such as handstands, cartwheels, backbends, and walkovers through drills and exercises, and progress to more advanced skills as they grow stronger. Acrobatics complements all dance genres and helps dancers develop a powerful, well-rounded physicality.

Production: Invite Only*

Pre-Advanced Production for students age 10+ is an invite-only class where selected dancers come together to create and perform a special group piece. Students in this class develop their performance skills, teamwork, and artistry while working on choreography that showcases the talent and dedication of Southeast School of Dance's studio. Being selected for Production is an exceptional honor and an exciting opportunity for dancers to shine on stage.

Pre Advanced Level

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What age group are Pre Advanced Level classes for?

Pre Advanced  level classes at Southeast School of Dance are for dancers ages 13+.

  • How does my child get placed in Pre-Advanced level?

Pre-Advanced is by placement only, based on our instructors' evaluation of a dancer's technique, dedication, and readiness for more advanced training. Dancers typically move into this level after building a strong foundation through our Beginner and Intermediate levels.

If you're wondering whether your dancer is ready for Pre-Advanced, talk with their current instructor. They can share where your dancer stands and what to work toward.

  • When can my dancer start Pointe, and what's required?

Pointe is available to Pre-Advanced and Advanced ballet dancers only, based on SESD placement, once a dancer has developed the strength, technique, and physical readiness to train safely en pointe. It's an extension of ballet training, not a separate skill dancers pick up on their own.

PBT (Progressing Ballet Technique) & Stretch is required alongside Pointe, and this isn't a formality. Dancing en pointe places significant demand on the feet, ankles, and core, and without the right strength and alignment behind it, the risk of injury goes up substantially. PBT & Stretch is specifically designed to build the muscular strength, stability, and body awareness that protect a dancer's feet and ankles while training on pointe, so we require it alongside Pointe for every dancer, without exception.

Pointe work is incorporated into the Spring Recital as part of the overall performance for our Pointe dancers, giving them the opportunity to showcase what they've trained all season to achieve. Our instructors will let you know when your dancer is ready to begin both Pointe and PBT  & Stretch.

  • How much of a time commitment is ballet at the Pre-Advanced level?

Ballet at the Pre-Advanced level meets twice a week for 75 minutes each class, reflecting the more advanced technique and artistry dancers are building at this stage. Dancers who add Pointe and PBT & Stretch, or variety classes like Jazz and Contemporary, will have additional weekly commitments on top of that.

Our team is happy to walk through the full schedule with you so you know what to expect before enrolling.

  • What is Production, and how does my dancer get selected?

Production is an invite-only class open to dancers ages 10 and up, where selected dancers come together to create and perform a special group piece that opens or closes our Spring Recital, developing performance skills, teamwork, and artistry at a more elevated level. Pre-Advanced dancers selected for Production often take on more demanding choreography and a stronger leadership role within the piece. Dancers are chosen by our instructors based on technique, dedication, and readiness.

Being selected for Production is considered an exceptional honor at SESD, and it's one of the biggest moments of the season. A costume fee applies, just like our other performing classes. If your dancer isn't invited but is interested, let their instructor know so they can keep an eye on their progress and consider them for future evaluation.

  • What is “Intermediate & Up” Acrobatics, and is my dancer placed with younger students?

Intermediate & Up Acrobatics is a combined class for dancers ages 10 and older, including our Intermediate, Pre-Advanced, and Advanced dancers, all training together. Class time focuses on strength, flexibility, balance, and body control, with dancers continuing to build on skills like handstands, cartwheels, backbends, and walkovers as they progress to more advanced skills.

Training across levels benefits everyone. Pre-Advanced dancers get to refine their skills further while modeling strong technique for younger classmates. Like our other Acrobatics classes, it isn't part of the Spring Recital but has its own special end-of-year showcase at the studio, and there's no costume fee.

  • Is ballet required for my dancer to take other genres at the Pre-Advanced level?

Ballet isn't required at the Pre-Advanced level, but we strongly recommend it since it continues to build the technical foundation other genres rely on. Dancers at this stage typically have a strong sense of the styles they love most.

We understand some dancers are focused on genres outside of ballet, and we support them in pursuing what excites them. Our team can help you find the right combination of classes for your dancer's goals.
