About Advanced

Our Advanced Level is for dedicated dancers who consistently demonstrate strong technique and artistry. At this level, students take on the most complex steps and combinations in their training, executing them with precision, control, and expressive performance quality. Advanced dancers are expected to bring focus and commitment to each combination and every class. They are leaders in our studio community and serve as role models and an inspiration to the dancers coming up behind them.

Advanced Level Dance Classes:

Advanced Ballet

Ballet is a classical dance form built on a strong foundation of technique, proper alignment, and body control. Students ages 14+ train at the highest level of classical ballet at Southeast School of Dance, executing complex barre and center work with precision, artistry, and performance-ready confidence. At the Advanced Level discipline, dedication, and love of dance come together in their fullest form.

Advanced Pointe

Advanced Pointe is an extension of ballet training for dancers 14+ who have developed the strength, technique, and physical readiness required to dance on pointe shoes. Students continue to refine their classical technique while beginning to build the skills needed to dance on pointe safely and beautifully. Pointe is available to Pre-Advanced and Advanced level ballet dancers only, which is determined by SESD placement.

Advanced PBT & Stretch

Advanced PBT, which stands for Progressing Ballet Technique, is a specialized program for students age 14+ that uses targeted exercises to strengthen the muscles used in ballet and dance. Combined with intentional stretching, this class helps ballet dancers improve their technique, flexibility, and body awareness in a thoughtful and structured way. PBT & Stretch is required for all Pointe dancers and is an excellent valuable addition to any dancer’s training. It is a technique only class so it does not have a dance in the Spring Recital.

Advanced Jazz

Jazz is an energetic and expressive style of dance that combines technical skill with personality and performance quality. Students ages 14+ train at the highest level of jazz at Southeast School of Dance, bringing technical mastery, dynamic movement, and personality to every combination with a confident, commanding stage presence. At the Advanced Level jazz becomes a complete artistic expression where technique, personality, and performance all come together.

Advanced Contemporary

Contemporary dance is a dynamic, artistic, and grounded genre that encourages dancers to move with freedom and intention. Students ages 14+ train at the highest level of contemporary at Southeast School of Dance, commanding body weight, kinesphere, and gravity with technical mastery and deepened artistry. At the Advanced Level dancers move through space with full command of varied textures, dynamic transitions, and floor work,  pushing the boundaries of movement while telling stories through their bodies with power and nuance.

Advanced Hip Hop

Hip Hop brings the awesome energy and culture of street dance into the studio. Students ages 14+ train at the highest level of hip hop at Southeast School of Dance, combining technical mastery, dynamic footwork, and age-appropriate choreography with an authentic, commanding stage presence. At the Advanced Level classes remain high energy and fun while dancers step fully into their own personality and command every beat with confidence and intention.

Advanced Lyrical

Lyrical dance combines the technical foundation of ballet and jazz with emotional storytelling and musical interpretation. Students ages 14+ train at the highest level of lyrical dance at Southeast School of Dance, bringing technical mastery and deep emotional storytelling to every performance. At the Advanced Level dancers express the full meaning and feeling behind the music with fluidity, artistry, and genuine heart and intention.

Intermediate and Up Acrobatics

Acrobatics at the advanced level for students ages 14+ blends elements of dance technique and gymnastics for a fun dynamic class. Class time focuses on strength, flexibility, balance, and body control through skill-based training rooted in safe technique. Students continue building on foundational skills such as handstands, cartwheels, backbends, and walkovers through drills and exercises, and progress to more advanced skills. Acrobatics complements all dance genres and helps dancers develop a powerful, well-rounded physicality.

Intermediate and Up JTS (Jumps, Turns, Strength)

Advanced JTS is a supplemental class for dancers aged 14+ designed to help build the skills and physical strength needed to excel in all of their dance classes. Students focus specifically on improving their jumps, perfecting their turns, and developing the core and overall body strength that supports strong technique. By building stamina and reinforcing proper alignment and muscle strength, this class also plays an important role in helping dancers stay healthy and reduce their risk of injury. JTS is a great complement to any dancer’s training schedule.

Advanced Production: Invite Only*

Advanced Production for students age 14+ is an invite-only class where selected dancers come together to create and perform a special group piece. Students in this class develop their performance skills, teamwork, and artistry while working on choreography that showcases the talent and dedication of Southeast School of Dance's studio. Being selected for Production is an exceptional honor and an exciting opportunity for dancers to shine on stage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Learn More About Advanced Level Classes

  • What makes Advanced level different from Pre-Advanced?

Advanced dancers consistently demonstrate strong technique and artistry, taking on the most complex steps and combinations in their training with precision, control, and expressive performance quality. Beyond technique, Advanced dancers are also considered leaders in our studio community, serving as role models for the dancers coming up behind them.

Placement into Advanced level is based on instructor evaluation, and dancers are expected to bring focus and commitment to every class at this stage.

  • How much of a time commitment is ballet at the Advanced level?

Ballet at the Advanced level meets twice a week for 85 minutes each class, the most intensive ballet schedule in our program, reflecting the discipline and dedication required at this stage. Dancers who add Pointe, PBT & Stretch, or variety classes will have additional time on top of that.

Our team is happy to walk through the full weekly schedule with you so you can plan around your dancer's other commitments.

  • Is PBT & Stretch only for Pointe dancers, or is it valuable for everyone at this level?

PBT & Stretch is required for all Pointe dancers. Dancing en pointe places significant demand on the feet, ankles, and core, and without the right strength and alignment behind it, the risk of injury goes up substantially. PBT & Stretch is specifically designed to build the muscular strength, stability, and body awareness that protect a dance's feet and ankles while training on pointe, so we require it alongside Pointe for every dancer, without exception.

That said, it's a valuable addition for any Advanced dancer, not just those training on pointe. It uses targeted exercises to strengthen the muscles used in ballet and dance, combined with intentional stretching to build technique, flexibility, and body awareness. PBT & Stretch itself is a technique-only class and doesn't have its own piece in the Spring Recital, but it's what makes the pointe work our dancers perform as part of the Spring Recital possible.

  • What is Production, and how competitive is it to be selected?

Production is an invite-only class open to dancers ages 10 and up, where selected dancers come together to create and perform a special group piece that opens or closes our Spring Recital, developing performance skills, teamwork, and artistry at the highest level our studio offers. Advanced dancers selected for Production often anchor the piece, setting the tone and standard for every dancer performing alongside them. Dancers are chosen by our instructors based on technique, dedication, and readiness.

Being selected for Production is considered an exceptional honor at SESD, and it's one of the biggest moments of the season. A costume fee applies, just like our other performing classes. If your dancer isn't invited but is interested, let their instructor know so they can keep an eye on their progress and considert them for future evaluation.

  • What is “Intermediate & Up” Acrobatics, and why are Advanced dancers training with younger students?

Intermediate & Up Acrobatics is a combined class for dancers ages 10 and older, including our Intermediate, Pre-Advanced, and Advanced dancers, all training together. Class time focuses on strength, flexibility, balance, and body control, with dancers progressing to more advanced skills as they grow stronger.

This structure benefits Advanced dancers too. They continue refining difficult skills at their own pace while naturally mentoring and inspiring younger classmates. Like our other Acrobatics classes, it isn't part of the Spring Recital but has its own special end-of-year showcase at the studio, and there's no costume fee.
