About Introduction

In the Introduction Level, dancers continue to build on the skills learned in the Foundation level, but new dancers are welcome too! These classes focus on strengthening dancer’s coordination skills while beginning to explore the world of dance more broadly. Students are introduced to new genres and focus on learning basic dance terminology and concepts. Classes are structured yet fun, encouraging curiosity and a growing enthusiasm for dance.

Introductions Level Dance Classes:

Introduction Ballet/Tap Combo

The Ballet/Tap Combo class gives dancers the best of both worlds! Students spend time exploring the grace and structure of ballet alongside the fun and rhythmic energy of tap. This combo class is a wonderful way for young dancers to experience two foundational genres and discover what they love most about dance.

Introduction Mini Groovers

Mini Groovers is an upbeat and energetic class that introduces young dancers to rhythm, groove, and movement in a fun and age-appropriate way. Students explore basic dance skills and get their first taste of hip hop through simple grooves, footwork, and movement that gets them up and bouncing with a smile. This class is perfect for little dancers who love to express themselves and feel the beat!

Introduction Jazz & Musical Theatre

Jazz and Musical Theatre come together in this dynamic and expressive class for our dancers. Students begin to learn jazz technique and movement while being introduced to the storytelling and performance elements of musical theatre. This class encourages young dancers to embrace their personality and discover the joy of performing both through movement and expression.

Introduction Acrobatics

Acrobatics at the Introduction Level introduces young dancers ages 5–7 to the exciting world of strength, flexibility, balance, and body control in an encouraging environment. Through age-appropriate skill-building exercises, students begin exploring foundational acrobatic skills like handstands, cartwheels, backbends, and walkovers. Acrobatics complements any additional genre of dance class by helping young dancers develop a powerful, well-rounded physicality.

Frequently Asked Questions

Learn More About Introduction Classes

  • What age is Introduction level for, and does my child need previous dance experience?

Introduction level is for dancers ages 5-7, and no previous experience is required. Dancers continuing from our Foundation level and dancers taking their very first class both belong here, since Introduction is built to meet each child where they are.

Classes focus on strengthening coordination while introducing new genres, dance terminology, and concepts in a way that's structured yet still fun. Whether your dancer has been in our Foundation classes or this is their first time stepping into a studio, they'll find their footing quickly.

  • What can my dancer and I expect on our first day?

The first day of dance class can be so exciting! For some dancers, it can also be quite intimidating–lots of new faces, loud music, and doing it all without their parent can be stressful. Our instructors and assistants will quickly welcome dancers into the dance room and begin class so there is very little time to become upset. We ask that parents wait in the lobby until class is over (sometimes, we need you to take your dancer to go to the bathroom). Typically, we don’t allow parents in the room as it can discourage their dancer from participating, and it can distract or upset other dancers who might be missing their own parent.

  • What if my dancer is too upset to dance?

Usually, after our “warm up” song, most dancers are comfortable enough to finish class. However, it is completely normal for new and young dancers to become upset before even entering the dance room. Teachers and helpers will try to be as encouraging as possible. If that’s not enticing enough to leave the parent’s side, we will invite the parent inside the dance studio. We always prefer that parents take their dancer to their “spot” in the dance room and encourage them to participate. Generally, whether it be in the same class or after a couple classes, parents can slowly make their way to the door so they can still be seen while dancers participate on their own. Within a month or so, most dancers are ready to fully participate all by themselves!

Upon occasion, a dancer might not be ready for dance class yet. Every child is unique and develops at their own pace. Some are very outgoing, while some need a lot of encouragement to step out of their comfort zone. If your dancer is upset before even arriving at the studio, or is very upset prior to/during class (heavy crying, not just a few nervous tears), they need to wait a few weeks before trying again. Pushing dancers too hard could make them perceive dance class as a negative experience, and push them away from dance for years to come. If you think your dancer might not be ready, please contact us — We are invested in your dancer’s education, and want to know if something isn’t right. If it is agreed a little break is needed, we are more than happy to credit your Registration fee for the next season.

  • What is the difference between the Introduction level classes, and how do I know which one is right for my dancer?

Introduction offers four classes, each building a different skill set:

    • Ballet/Tap Combo teaches the grace of ballet alongside the rhythm of tap.
    •  Mini Groovers introduces hip hop through simple grooves and footwork.
    • Jazz & Musical Theatre blends jazz technique with performance and storytelling.
    • Acrobatics builds strength, flexibility, and body control.

If you're not sure where to start, Ballet/Tap Combo is a great foundation for any dancer since it builds core technique used across every style. From there, many families add a second class based on what

    excites their dancer most.

  • Will my dancer perform in a recital at the Introduction level?

Yes, most Introduction level classes perform in our Spring Recital in May. This is a highlight of the season and a chance for dancers to show off everything they've learned. Each performing class requires a costume, and costume fees vary by class. The exception is Acrobatics, which isn't part of the Spring Recital but has its own special end-of-year showcase at the studio, giving our Acro dancers a chance to shine too.
