Southeast School of Dance offers competitive dance opportunities for soloists ages 9 and up. Our program includes individualized coaching, personalized choreography, and real performance experience.

With Competition Dance at SESD
Competition dance offers dancers a chance to grow beyond the classroom, refining technique through one on one coaching, building confidence through repeated performance experience, and learning the discipline and focus that comes with preparing a solo for the stage. At this time, we offer our competition opportunities to soloists, which means each competitive dancer gets highly individualized attention and choreography built specifically around their strengths.
How Competition Works at SESD
Every interested dancer goes through an evaluation. If they're ready, we'll walk you through all the requirements and fees. If they're not quite there yet, we'll map out a plan together to help get them ready for competitive dance.
Interested families can express interest directly, or a dancer may be invited by SESD staff.
At least one summer session of dance is required to be eligible.
Competition soloists commit to monthly private lessons and regular technique classes throughout the season.
The minimum age to participate in competition dance is 9.
Genre options include Contemporary, Jazz, Jazz Funk, Hip Hop, Lyrical, and Musical Theatre.
Soloists commit to attending all competitions on the season's schedule.

How does my child become a competition dance soloist at Southeast School of Dance?
Reach out to express interest or your dancer may be invited by Southeast School of Dance staff. From there we will evaluate readiness together. If your dancer is ready we will walk you through all requirements and fees. If not we will build a plan together to help get them there — competition dance at Southeast School of Dance is about meeting every dancer where they are and helping them grow toward the stage.
Is competition dance only for advanced dancers at Southeast School of Dance?
Not necessarily. Minimum age is 9, but readiness is evaluated dancer by dancer rather than against a fixed bar. If your dancer is not quite ready for competition dance yet, Southeast School of Dance will create a plan to help them work toward it. Every competitive journey looks different and we meet dancers where they are.
What is the time and financial commitment for competition dance at Southeast School of Dance?
Competition dance soloists at Southeast School of Dance commit to at least one summer session of dance, plus monthly private lessons and regular technique classes throughout the season.
Costs include choreography, private lessons, competition entry fees, costume, and a staff administration fee that covers registration, coordination, and staff attendance at every competition. Families from Greensboro, High Point, Jamestown, and Pleasant Garden are welcome to contact us directly for current rates.
Does my child have to attend every competition on the schedule?
Yes. Competition dance soloists at Southeast School of Dance commit to the full season's competition schedule.
This commitment is an important part of what makes the competition dance experience valuable: consistency, follow-through, and showing up for your teammates and coaches are skills that serve dancers beyond the stage.
