About Intermediate
Intermediate dancers are ready to take their skills to the next level. Students are expected to consistently demonstrate correct technique, control, and coordination as class combinations grow more complex. This is also an exciting time for dancers to begin discovering their own artistry and personal expression within each genre they study.
Intermediate Level Dance Classes:
Intermediate Ballet
Ballet is a classical dance form built on a strong foundation of technique, proper alignment, and body control. Students ages 10–12 deepen their technical foundation as barre and center work becomes more demanding, refining strength, flexibility, and grace through more complex combinations. At the Intermediate Level dancers develop greater musicality, artistry, and body awareness in a focused yet encouraging environment where every student continues to grow at their own pace.
Intermediate Tap
Tap is a fun and rhythmic style of dance where movement and music come together through percussion and sound. Students ages 10–12 build on foundational footwork as rhythmic patterns become more complex and musicality deepens. At the Intermediate Level dancers are introduced to syncopated rhythms and more demanding combinations, developing the coordination, timing, and technical precision that define a strong tap dancer at Southeast School of Dance.
Intermediate Jazz
Jazz is an energetic and expressive style of dance that combines technical skill with personality and performance quality. Students ages 10–12 build on their foundational jazz technique as isolations, syncopated rhythms, and dynamic movement become more complex and demanding. At the Intermediate Level musicality and confidence deepen alongside technical skill, challenging dancers to bring greater expression and performance quality to every combination.
Intermediate Contemporary
Contemporary dance is a dynamic, artistic, and grounded genre that encourages dancers to move with freedom and intention. Students ages 10–12 begin exploring the power behind their body weight, kinesphere, and gravity through thoughtful use of space. At the Intermediate Level dancers are introduced to varied textures, dynamic transitions, and floor work, deepening the connection between technique and artistry as they discover new ways to tell stories through their bodies.
Intermediate Hip Hop
Hip Hop brings the awesome energy and culture of street dance into the studio. Students ages 10–12 build on their foundational grooves and footwork as age-appropriate choreography becomes more dynamic. At the Intermediate Level rhythm, confidence, and self-expression deepen alongside technical skill, challenging dancers to bring greater energy and authenticity to every beat.
Intermediate Lyrical
Lyrical dance combines the technical foundation of ballet and jazz with emotional storytelling and musical interpretation. Students ages 10–12 deepen their connection to the music, developing greater fluidity, expressiveness, and the ability to communicate meaning through movement. At the Intermediate Level dancers refine the technical and emotional layers of lyrical dance, performing with increasing heart and intention.
Intermediate JTS (Jumps, Turns, Strength)
JTS is a supplemental class for dancers ages 10-12 designed to help build the skills and physical strength needed to excel in all of their dance classes. Students focus specifically on improving their jumps, perfecting their turns, and developing the core and overall body strength that supports strong technique. By building stamina and reinforcing proper alignment and muscle strength, this class also plays an important role in helping dancers stay healthy and reduce their risk of injury. JTS is a great complement to any dancer’s training schedule.
Intermediate Acrobatics
Acrobatics for students ages 10-12 blends elements of dance technique and gymnastics for a fun dynamic class. At the intermediate level, class time focuses on strength, flexibility, balance, and body control through skill-based training rooted in safe technique. Students build on foundational skills such as handstands, cartwheels, backbends, and walkovers through drills and exercises, and begin progressing to more advanced skills as they grow stronger. Acrobatics complements all dance genres and helps dancers develop a powerful, well-rounded physicality.
Intermediate Production: Invite Only*
Production is an invite-only class where selected dancers come together to create and perform a special group piece. Students in this class develop their performance skills, teamwork, and artistry while working on choreography that showcases the talent and dedication of our studio. Being selected for Production is an exceptional honor and an exciting opportunity for dancers to shine on stage.

Frequently Asked Questions
Learn More About Intermediate Level
What age group are Intermediate Level classes for?
Intermediate level classes at Southeast School of Dance are for dancers ages 10-12.
What makes Intermediate level different from Beginner level?
At Intermediate level, dancers are expected to consistently demonstrate correct technique, control, and coordination as combinations grow more complex across genres like Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Contemporary, Hip Hop, and Lyrical. This is also when dancers begin developing their own artistry and personal expression within each style.
We still strongly recommend ballet at this level since it continues to build the foundation other genres rely on, though dancers are welcome to focus on the styles that excite them most.
My child is 13 or older and has never taken a dance class. Where would they start?
My child is 13 or older and has never taken a dance class. Where would they start?
Intermediate level is the right starting place for new dancers ages 13 and up. It's designed to build real technique from the ground up, so a first-time dancer and a dancer continuing from our Beginner level can both train and grow together at this stage.
Starting dance a little later than most is far more common than people think, even among renowned professional dancers.
Misty Copeland, one of the most celebrated ballerinas of her generation, didn't take her first ballet class until she was 13 and went on to become a principal dancer with American Ballet Theatre. David Hallberg, another ABT principal, didn't begin formal ballet training until age 13 either. Starting later doesn't close any doors. It just means the journey begins at a different place, and our Intermediate level is built to meet new dancers exactly where they are.
What is JTS, and should my dancer take it?
JTS stands for Jumps, Turns, Strength, and it's a supplemental class designed to build the physical strength and technique dancers need to excel across all of their classes. It focuses on improving jumps, perfecting turns, and developing the core and body strength that supports strong technique in every genre.
JTS also helps build stamina and reinforce proper alignment, which plays an important role in reducing injury risk. It's a great addition for any Intermediate dancer looking to strengthen their overall training.
What is Production, and how does my dancer get selected?
Production is an invite-only class open to dancers ages 10 and up, where selected dancers come together to create and perform a special group piece that opens or closes our Spring Recital, developing performance skills, teamwork, and artistry along the way. For Intermediate dancers, it's often a first taste of this level of performance opportunity. Dancers are chosen by our instructors based on technique, dedication, and readiness.
Being selected for Production is considered an exceptional honor at SESD, and it's one of the biggest moments of the season. A costume fee applies, just like our other performing classes. If your dancer isn't invited but is interested, let their instructor know so they can keep an eye on their progress and consider them for future evaluation.
How many classes should my Intermediate dancer take, and how much of a time commitment is that?
Most Intermediate dancers take Ballet plus one or two variety classes, which builds a strong technical foundation while still leaving room for other activities. Some dancers choose the unlimited variety option if they want to explore several genres at once.
Class length and frequency increase somewhat from Beginner level as technique becomes more demanding, but there's no single right amount. Our team is happy to help you find a schedule that fits your child's goals and your family's routine.
Will my dancer need to audition or be evaluated to move up from Intermediate level?
No formal audition is required to progress through Intermediate level. Advancement is based on age, ability, and instructor evaluation over the course of the season, so dancers move up when they're truly ready.
This approach means every dancer builds a solid foundation at their own pace, rather than being rushed ahead before they're prepared for the next level.
What is "Intermediate & Up" Acrobatics, and is my child placed with older students?
Intermediate and Up Acrobatics is a combined class for dancers ages 10 and older, including our Intermediate, Pre-Advanced, and Advanced dancers, all training together. Class time focuses on strength, flexibility, balance, and body control, with dancers building on skills like handstands, cartwheels, backbends, and walkovers as they progress at their own pace. Training across age groups actually benefits dancers at every level. Younger dancers are challenged and inspired by watching older students, while more advanced dancers get a chance to build confidence and leadership. Like our other Acrobatics classes, it isn't part of the Spring Recital but has its own special end-of-year showcase at the studio. There's no costume fee for Acro.
